About the event

Thinking Spot regulars know Ben Orlin is our favorite Math Author and has visited us several times including hosting multiple Math Game Nights!

This time he has taken on an even greater challenge - explaining Math to English Majors! His new book "Math for English Majors" comes out Sep 3rd.

The Book

In this trailblazing work, from the internet’s most empathetic math teacher, Ben Orlin unravels the secrets behind the world’s most confounding language. Math, it is said, is the "universal language.” But if a language brings people together, why does math make so many of us feel so alone? In Math for English Majors, Ben offers fresh insights for the mathematically perplexed and mathematical masters alike.

The Event

We are celebrating by hosting Ben Orlin in a Panel discussion with -

  • Kristin Heysse - an assistant professor of mathematics at Macalester College. Her research is in discrete mathematics, specializing in spectral graph theory.  When she's not doing math, Kristin enjoys crafting, gaming, and drinking coffee.

AND

  • Tina Zigon - High School English Teacher extraordinaire at the International School of Minnesota who is taking on a challenge of her own in reading outside her comfort zone!

The Author

Ben Orlin is a master storyteller and Math is his language. If you ever felt intimidated by Math and wondered why you should care - his books are for you!  If you ever felt like Math is just facts and figures, his hilariously illustrated stories and examples are just the antidote!  Check out his blog Mathwithbaddrawings.com to see how he makes learning Math a joyful romp. Steven Strogatz had this to say about  Math with Bad Drawings - "Brilliant, wide-ranging and irreverent, it adds ha-ha to aha. It'll make you smile-plus it might just make you smarter and wiser".
